Choose Canvas if you want one ladder and one editor
Three plans, every block, pattern and demo in each, renewal at the price you first paid, and demos built from blocks so no page builder is required. Headers, footers and mega menus are built in the block editor, and AI text and image credits come with the plan.
Choose OceanWP if you want the cheapest way in
Nearly 10 million downloads, 5,714 reviews and more than a million websites since 2016, on a free theme that includes features other themes charge for. The gallery is huge and properly filterable, and its templates ship royalty-free Freepik and Flaticon imagery.

258 blocks against 18 widgets
OceanWP counts 18 widgets on its own comparison page and expects Elementor to supply the rest. Canvas ships 258 blocks in 10 families with 183 patterns, so sliders, portfolios, events, forms, pricing tables and 22 WooCommerce blocks are in the inserter from the start.
One price ladder instead of four
Ocean sells the Pro Bundle, Site Booster, Ocean eCommerce Pro and Priority Support as separate products across roughly 26 price points, each permanently struck through against a higher regular price. Canvas has three plans and one optional add-on, and renews at the price you first paid.
Demos that do not need a page builder
Most OceanWP templates are built for Elementor, so importing one commits you to that plugin. All 80 Canvas demos are built from blocks, import in the block editor and roll back cleanly, and each one is a complete website with a published page count.
Header building in the editor, on every plan
OceanWP configures its header in the Customizer and puts the sticky header behind the Pro Bundle. Canvas builds headers, footers, top bars, mega menus and page titles as block records with 92 options and layout presets including sticky, transparent and floating, in every plan.

9,936,772 downloads, 5,714 reviews on WordPress.org, more than a million websites and a track record since 2016. Canvas is new as a WordPress theme. Judge it on inventory you can count and demos you can preview.
A bigger gallery with licensed imagery
About 450 template cards across 26 filter tabs, with per-demo previews, and Freepik and Flaticon images included with no attribution required. Canvas publishes 80 demos and its demo photography is placeholder imagery you replace before launch.
The cheapest way in, and a lifetime option
A free theme that includes features others charge for, a Pro Bundle from $42 a year and lifetime licences from $168. Canvas has no free edition and no lifetime plan, and starts at $39 a year.
Policies published in full
A support policy, a refund policy, a system requirements page and a stated pledge of no fake tests and no false claims. The refund policy does ask you to contact support first, which the marketing copy does not mention, but all of it is public and easy to find.
Moving a website from OceanWP to Canvas
Content is safe. The Customizer design and anything drawn in Elementor are what you rebuild, so decide first whether you are keeping Elementor at all.
What carries over
- Posts, pages, media, categories, tags, users and menus, exactly as WordPress stores them.
- Your WooCommerce store: products, variations, orders, customers and their history.
- Pages built with Elementor, as long as you keep Elementor installed.
- Anything written with core blocks, which opens in Canvas unchanged.
- Plugins you installed yourself, your domain, your host and your URLs.
What you rebuild
- Customizer settings for colours, typography and layout, which become Theme Options and style variations.
- Header, footer and sticky header configuration, which becomes a Canvas header record.
- Ocean extensions such as the popup builder, custom post types and the pixel tracker, which map onto Canvas popups, content types and Theme Options.
- Any imported OceanWP template, which is replaced by one of the 80 demos or rebuilt from 183 patterns.
- Site Booster tuning, which becomes the 35 performance optimisations built into Canvas.
Small sites go faster the other way round: import the closest of the 80 demo websites, then move your text and images in.

Do I need Elementor to use the Canvas demos?
No, every one of the 80 Canvas demos is built from Canvas and core blocks, so it imports and edits in the block editor with no page builder installed. Most OceanWP demos are built for Elementor, with around 30 Gutenberg ones in a separate filter, so the design you pick can decide which plugin you have to run.
How many separate purchases does each one take?
Canvas is one plan, plus an optional White Label add-on at account level. OceanWP runs four paid ladders at once: the Pro Bundle, Site Booster, Ocean eCommerce Pro and Priority Support, across roughly 26 price points. That is more flexible if you want only one piece, and harder to answer if the question is what will this cost me.
Which one is cheaper to start with?

What happens when each licence expires?
Canvas renders but freezes, as the pricing page sets out: every premium block keeps rendering for visitors, and updates, demo imports, AI and premium block editing pause until you renew, at the price you first paid. OceanWP licences last a year, after which updates and support stop and renewal is at a locked price.
Do the demo websites include images I can use?
OceanWP has a better answer here than Canvas: its templates bundle royalty-free Freepik and Flaticon imagery with no attribution required. Canvas demo photography is placeholder imagery for the demo content, so replace it with your own pictures or licensed stock before you go live. The AI image generator in every Canvas plan is one way to do that.
