Terms of Service

These terms cover buying and using Canvas: what you get, what you agree to and what happens if something goes wrong. They are written in plain language on purpose.

1. Accepting these terms

By buying a Canvas licence, by downloading the Canvas theme or the Canvas Core plugin, or by using this website, you agree to these terms. If you are agreeing for a company, you confirm that you are allowed to commit that company. If you do not agree, do not use Canvas.

These terms are an agreement between you and SemiColonWeb, the publisher of Canvas.

2. Your account

Buying Canvas creates an account on your dashboard. Your account holds your licence keys, your downloads, your billing details and your invoices.

  • Keep your login details private. You are responsible for everything done through your account.
  • One account per customer. Do not share an account, and do not pass licence keys to people outside your business.
  • Keep your email address current, because purchase confirmations, invoices and licence notices go there.

3. Purchase, renewal and cancellation

Canvas is sold as a yearly licence in three plans, and every plan includes every block, pattern, template and demo:

  • Starter, $39 a year, for 3 websites.
  • Pro, $89 a year, for 10 websites.
  • Agency, $199 a year, for 100 websites, plus activation across a WordPress multisite network.
  • White Label, $99 a year, added to any plan at account level.

A licence renews automatically one year after purchase, at the same price you paid. Once a subscription is running, we do not raise the price of its renewals.

You can cancel at any time from your dashboard. Cancelling stops the next renewal. It does not end the licence you paid for, which runs to the end of its term.

Prices are in US dollars and do not include any sales tax or VAT that your country requires us or our payment provider to collect.

4. Licence keys and sites

Your plan sets how many WordPress sites can have Canvas activated at the same time. A site is one WordPress installation on one domain.

  • Staging and development copies of a site you have already licensed do not use another seat.
  • Client sites are allowed on your own licence when you build and manage them.
  • The Agency plan also covers activation across a WordPress multisite network.
  • The White Label add-on changes how Canvas appears in the WordPress admin. It never changes what Canvas does.

5. Acceptable use

The code is released under the GPL and you may modify it. Acceptable use is about the service that your key unlocks, not about the code. You agree not to:

  • Share, publish, resell or sublicense a licence key.
  • Activate Canvas on sites that you neither build nor manage, in order to avoid buying a larger plan.
  • Redistribute our demo packages, our update service or our AI service as part of another product.
  • Work around the licence checks that gate updates, demo downloads, AI generation and premium editing.
  • Use Canvas AI to produce unlawful material, or use our servers to attack, scan or overload them.

6. Service availability

Updates, demo package downloads and Canvas AI are online services running on our servers. We work to keep them available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access and we may take them offline for maintenance.

If a licence check cannot reach our servers, Canvas continues to work through a grace period of 14 days, so a network problem on either side never affects your site.

We may change or retire parts of the service over time. Changes that affect how you use Canvas are recorded in the changelog.

7. Intellectual property

The Canvas theme and the Canvas Core plugin are released under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. Under that licence you may use, study, modify and redistribute the code.

The GPL covers code. It does not transfer the Canvas name or the Canvas logo, which are our trademarks, and it does not cover our marketing material. Do not use our name or logo in a way that suggests we made, endorsed or support your product.

Photographs and other media bundled with the demos are placeholder content for demonstration. They are licensed for use inside the demo you import, not for redistribution as stock imagery.

Anything you build with Canvas is yours. We claim no rights over your content, your designs or your client work.

8. Refunds

You can ask for a full refund within 7 days of your first purchase. Renewals and upgrades are not refundable. The conditions and the way to request one are set out in the refund policy, which forms part of these terms.

9. Termination

Stop using Canvas whenever you like: cancel your subscription and deactivate your sites.

We may suspend or end a licence if these terms are broken, in particular if a key is shared or resold, if the licence checks are circumvented, or if a payment is reversed after a chargeback. Where a breach can be put right, we will say what is wrong before we act.

If your licence ends for any reason, your live sites keep rendering. What stops is the service: updates, demo imports, AI generation and premium editing.

10. Liability and warranties

Canvas is provided as it is. We do not promise that it is free of defects or that it fits a particular purpose. That is what the GPL says as well, in longer words.

You are responsible for your website, its hosting, its other plugins and its data. Take backups before you update anything, and test on a staging copy when a change matters.

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for lost profit, lost data, lost business or any other indirect loss. Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us for your licence in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing here removes rights that consumer law in your country gives you.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product changes. The date at the top of this page shows the current version. If a change matters to your subscription, we will tell you by email before your next renewal, and material changes are also noted in the changelog. Continuing to use Canvas after a change means you accept the updated terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the country in which SemiColonWeb is established, and any dispute that cannot be settled between us goes to the competent courts there. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in.
