Canvas vs Kadence: a Kadence alternative for the design half
Both build in the block editor. This is an argument about scope, then: Kadence sells design alongside security, backups and memberships in three tiers, and Canvas sells one design product with everything in every plan. Every Kadence figure below was read from its product pages on 4 September 2026.
Is Canvas a Kadence Theme alternative? Who each one is for
You are choosing between a deeper design toolkit and a wider bundle. Both are reasonable purchases; they solve different problems.
Choose Canvas if the design work is the work
258 blocks, 183 patterns and 80 complete demo websites, each previewable by name, with published site limits, published AI allowances and a published expiry contract. Everything ships in every plan, from $39 a year.
Choose Kadence if you want more than a theme on one bill
Pro and Elite fold in Shop Kit for WooCommerce, a security firewall, daily backups, memberships and multi-site management, with 24/7 ticket and chat support. If you would otherwise buy three or four plugins for that, one renewal is simpler and Canvas does not replace them.

Where Canvas is stronger

A much larger block library
Canvas ships 258 blocks in 10 families, 202 of them in the inserter, plus 183 patterns. Kadence publishes 30+ blocks on its pricing card. Both save real block markup, so this is a straight comparison of how much is built before you reach for custom code.
Demos with names and categories
The Kadence gallery lists 87 templates called G01 to G90 with generated thumbnails, no categories and no filters, while its pricing card claims 200+. Canvas publishes 80 demo websites in 16 categories, each named, categorised, previewable live and labelled with its page count.
Limits and refunds printed where you buy
Canvas prints its site limits, its 7-day refund window and its expiry contract on the pricing page. Kadence's pricing table states no site limit and no currency, and its 30-day refund lives on a policy page the product page never links, while the terms in the same estate say fees are non-refundable.
AI with a published allowance
Kadence lists inline AI tools and, on Elite, AI design tools, with no allowance published. Canvas publishes exactly what each plan includes each month: 200 text and 30 images on Starter, up to 2,500 and 500 on Agency, with the balance shown in the editor.
Where Kadence is stronger
Kadence beats us in four places, starting with the one no theme comparison should dodge.
One bill for more than design
Shop Kit, a security firewall with two-factor authentication and virtual patching, daily backups, membership tiers with recurring billing, and multi-site management on Elite. Canvas does none of that: it is a theme and website builder, and those jobs stay with dedicated plugins.
A free theme and free blocks at scale
The Kadence theme publishes 500,000+ active installations on WordPress.org and Kadence Blocks 600,000+, so there is a free path in and a large pool of people who know it well. Canvas has no free edition.
A 30-day refund against our 7 days
Kadence's published policy gives 30 days from purchase, four times our window. It is badly signposted, which is a marketing problem rather than a customer one: if you ask inside 30 days, you get your money back.
Round-the-clock support and deep docs
Support runs 24/7 by ticket and live chat through Nexcess, with a stated aim of answering in under four hours, and the documentation keeps 114 articles on Kadence Blocks alone. Canvas answers through a support forum backed by 382 documentation articles, and publishes no round-the-clock promise.
Moving a website from Kadence to Canvas
Both products build with blocks, so this is one of the gentler moves. The design layer is what you rebuild, and the bundle features are what you replace.
What carries over
- Posts, pages, media, categories, tags, users and menus, exactly as WordPress stores them.
- Sections built with Kadence Blocks, which keep rendering while the free plugin stays installed.
- Your WooCommerce store: products, variations, orders, customers and their history.
- Plugins you installed yourself, your domain, your host and your URLs.
- Any content written with core blocks, which opens in Canvas unchanged.
What you rebuild
- Kadence header, footer and navigation layouts, which become Canvas header records.
- Hooked elements and conditional content, which Canvas covers with display conditions on any block.
- Shop Kit features, which map onto the 22 Canvas WooCommerce blocks, swatches and AJAX cart.
- Kadence theme settings, which become 460 Theme Options and style variations.
- Security, backups and memberships, which are not part of Canvas and need their own plugins.
On a small site, import the closest of the 80 demo websites first and move your content in afterwards.

Does Canvas include security, backups or memberships?
No, Canvas leaves those out, and that is the clearest difference between the two. Canvas is a WordPress theme and website builder: blocks, demos, chrome builders, forms, WooCommerce blocks, SEO and performance. Security, backups and membership tiers are what the Kadence Pro and Elite bundles add, and if you want them in one bill, Kadence answers that and we do not.
How many websites does a Canvas licence cover?
A Canvas licence covers 3 on Starter, 10 on Pro and 100 on Agency, which also activates a whole multisite network, with staging copies free. Kadence's pricing table does not state a site limit for any of its three tiers, so ask before you buy if you build for clients.
Is Kadence still sold on its own website?
Not since May 2026: kadencewp.com redirects to a product page inside liquidweb.com, and the documentation now sits under Nexcess. The product is actively sold and supported; it no longer has a site of its own, which is worth knowing when you go looking for a changelog or a roadmap.
Can I keep my Kadence Blocks content when I switch?
Yes, sections built with Kadence Blocks keep rendering under Canvas while the free Kadence Blocks plugin stays installed. Rebuild them with Canvas blocks at whatever pace the project allows. What has to be rebuilt is the Kadence header and footer, hooked elements, and anything that came from the Pro layer.
What does Canvas do for a WooCommerce store?
Canvas ships 22 store blocks and 18 store templates, with attribute swatches, an AJAX cart and 19 complete demo stores ready to import. They are in every plan. Kadence covers similar ground with Shop Kit, which starts at the $299 Pro tier. The WooCommerce page lists every block.
Is Canvas a Kadence Theme alternative?
Yes, Canvas is a Kadence alternative for the design half of what Kadence sells. Both build in the block editor. Canvas goes deeper on design, with 258 blocks, 183 patterns and 80 demos, every one previewable by name; Kadence's bundles go wider, adding Shop Kit, a security firewall, backups and memberships. If you would otherwise buy three or four plugins for those, Kadence's renewal may be the better deal, as the section above says.
